Effective January 1, 2010 Summa Health System Hospitals are instituting a tobacco-free workplace policy. “Tobacco Free” includes the use of any tobacco products. Pre-employment drug testing will include screening for tobacco product use, and prospective employees (including residents/fellows) who test positive will not be hired.

Applicant eligibility is also based on the following criteria:

- graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications:
- have received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates prior to appointment, or
- have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction in which they are in training.

Residency directors may seek an exception to this policy for candidates with passing scores less than 80 if such candidates are being recommended by individuals well known to the respective residency program. Under this circumstance, the residency director and the Vice President, Medical Education & Research must agree to allow such an interview, after considering the following additional factors or requirements:
- strength of curriculum vitae, including medical school attended
- strength of recommendation letters
- strength and currency of clinical experience
- candidates granted interviews must have been graduated from medical school no more than four years prior to the date residency training would potentially commence at Summa Health System
After any interview is granted under such an exception, an offer of a training position or the decision to list on ranking list must be approved by both the residency director and the Vice President, Medical Education & Research.
- graduates with prior training in accordance with the following policy:
Consideration of Applicants with prior training for Summa Health System Residency Programs Applicants for Summa Health System sponsored residency programs who have completed prior residency training will not be considered for residency positions unless they:

- were graduated from the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.
This policy will not apply to years of training which are required for matriculation into a given residency and will therefore also not apply to programs which require prior training for admission. Residency directors may seek an exception to this policy for candidates who are being recommended by individuals well known to the respective program.
After any interview is granted under such an exception, an offer of a training position or the decision to list the applicant on the ranking list must be approved by both the residency director and the Vice President, Medical Education & Research.
In general, applicants use the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) to apply for PGY-I resident positions. Students apply to the ERAS system through their medical schools. Exceptions to this policy are applicants for positions in Ophthalmology and Plastic Surgery residency programs. Applications for these two programs are processed through the Centralized Application Service (CAS).
Applicants from medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education or the American Osteopathic Association must have passed Part 1 of the USMLE, or COMPLEX, to begin a residency training program at Summa Health System.
Applications are reviewed on a continuous basis and need not be complete to grant or deny an interview. We are unable to discuss an applicant’s qualifications or meet is person to review an application. Due to the high volume of applications received by some departments, it is not possible to interview every applicant.. Therefore, interviews in all departments are scheduled at the discretion of the residency program. After the residency director grants an applicant an interview, arrangements for the interview are made through the Office of Medical Education. Individual interviews are one day in length unless otherwise requested by the residency director.
The Vice President, Medical Education & Research is available to assist in interviewing the applicants and ranking the applicants as requested by the residency director. Residency directors submit their rank order list to the Office of Medical Education for the submission to the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) or equivalent organization. The Office of Medical Education reviews all applications for residency positions for compliance with these policies. The Vice President, Medical Education & Research as the Designated Institutional Official reviews the final rank order list of each residency prior to submission to the NRMP. All rank order lists are strictly confidential. Notification of the outcome of the Match will occur in accordance with the regulations established by the NRMP or equivalent organization and the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.
